The Lake Preston Walk starts on the corner of Preston Beach Road and Preston Drive and is easily identifiable by three tall totem poles.
This easy trail is laid with crushed shells and follows Preston Drive down past the golf course; however most of what hikers will find underfoot is roo poo. The local kangaroo population is quite suburbanised and they can be seen in abundance from the beginning to the end of the trail. They are one of the main highlights of this walk.
Hikers will pass The Stump on the golf course then follow the trail around a dense paperbark forest on the right hand side.
Look for a marker at the end of the trail that indicates the way out to the edge of Preston Lake, a long and thin salt lake (approx 28kms long) that runs parallel to the coast. Plenty more kangaroos can be seen feeding at the lake’s edge and also an assortment of birdlife at different times of the year.
Return by the same route.
